Paint with Pastels with Beverley Conrad
This class will teach the basics of working with pastel chalk from how to choose materials to how to keep the colors clear and vibrant. Unlike wet paint, with pastel painting the colors are mixed on the paper as you go. There’s a technique to this in order to keep the colors fresh! Learn to coax a rainbow of colors from a limited selection of chalk, as well as how to fix mistakes without having the work turn to mud.
Instructor will have a variety of pastel chalks and paper types for demonstration. Please bring soft pastels, not oil pastels, to work with.
Painting 2D Design, 4-week workshop
with Ellison Strosser
Basic level drawing and painting experience suggested ( ages 12+)
This class will be held in the second floor classroom (stair access only). The goal of this class is to demonstrate the process of formulating a design, creating a composition, translating onto a canvas, and painting with either watercolor or acrylic paint. The class is broken down into four weeks.
Material to bring: Your own laptop for creating your design (only if planning on using a computer),sketchbook, canvas or canvas board, paint, pencil, eraser (some material such as paint, paper, and tape will be available, but do not plan to solely rely on our stuff.)
Week 1: Creating design- This can be done either on your laptop or in your sketchbook. Some reference material will be provided and feel free to bring your own. We will discuss various ways to edit and manipulate your composition by doing short peer reviews. Then we’ll review the different effects one can achieve by using watercolor or acrylic paints. Prepping and priming our canvas will conclude this weeks introduction.
Week 2: Finalizing design- We will translate our compositions onto canvas board by sending the images to my computer and I will be projecting them into a blank wall where each artist will trace their designs onto a canvas board. If you have decided to do a sketch or hand drawing, we will simply take a picture of your work to put on computer for projection. Once the image is traced, let the painting begin. You may also choose to skip this step in class, and translate your image onto canvas board on your own time so you can just get into painting during class time. I will be providing the projector so each designed will be put onto my computer and we will then project two or three designs at a time.
Week 3: Painting design: This week we focus on painting our 2D design. I will guide you on how to approach your painting and answer any questions you may have while in progress. If you are inspired to do your piece in watercolor or acrylic, and I can help you achieve the final look you are going for.
Week 4: Final product: If you are finished with your painting and it is dry, I will review how to seal the painting with a protective coat depending on the type of paint you’ve chosen. If you are not done painting and would like to continue working you may do this as well and I will give you instructions on how to seal your painting at home.
Limited Seating: 8 Artists
